About us

Welcome

The Opelika Public Library Special Collections and Archives preserves the documentary record of Opelika and Lee County and makes it available to everyone. This portal is where that record lives online: digitized newspapers, photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, and the papers of the people, families, and organizations who shaped this community.

What we do

We collect, preserve, and provide access to materials that document life in Opelika and the surrounding area. Some of these materials have been part of the library for decades. Others arrive through the generosity of families, businesses, and organizations who trust us to keep their records safe and usable for generations to come. We describe each collection according to national archival standards, so you can find what you need and understand where it came from.

Using the collection

Materials in this portal are here for research, study, and personal enjoyment. Many items are in the public domain. Others carry rights that affect how they can be reused, and we note those where we can. If you have a question about reusing an item, or you would like a higher-resolution copy, please get in touch. Detailed finding aids for our collections are available at opl.libraryhost.com.

Add to the archive

The archive grows because the community builds it. If you have letters, photographs, business records, scrapbooks, home movies, maps, or other materials that tell the story of Opelika and Lee County, we would like to hear from you. A short conversation is the best place to start, and there is no obligation to donate.
